A purchase earlier this year at Bloodstock South Africa Cape Yearling Sale, which takes place at the exclusive equestrian estate of Mistico, Captain’s Run has set a new course record on Thursday for trainer and part owner Corne Spies over 800m at the Vaal.
She also banked the BSA Juvenile Bonus of R60 000, crediting it against her R80 000 purchase price for owners Corne Spies Racing (Pty) Ltd and Messrs X Spies and T P Zackey (J H de Lange).Interestingly, the second placed horse Heavens Girl, trained by Paul Peter, a major supporter of the Cape Yearling Sale, finished second just 1.25 lengths off.
The filly is by Soft Falling Rain and bred by Ndoro Stud. Paul Peter was the top buyer of this particular sale, taking home 27 yearlings at the time and spending R1,7-million.The clock stopped in a record 45.42 seconds (bettering a 1985 record set by Gyaros), with the 2nd placed horse 45.63.
Captain’s Run descends from the family of another Dr Ian Heyns’ bred – the smart Curved Ball gelding, Hard To Play, as well as the likes of Secret Babe and The Highwayman. The 2021 Cape Yearling Sale is set to take place on 28 February, again at Mistico Equestrian Centre.
Captain Of All was the leading sire in his first year crop with 36.8% winners to runners, two Black Type winners and over R1,800 000 in stakes banked. He stands at Klawervlei Stud.
Corne Spies is set to send Gr2 winner Nourbese and Gr1 winner Van Halen to Saudi Arabia to contest the Saudi Cup for $10 million.
