COCKNEY Pride came from the back of the field in a competitive Progress Plate over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday to dead-heat with Stuart Pettigrew’s Sweet and Spicy.
Cockney Pride hadn’t won since claiming the Gr2 Golden Slipper in July 2019, but it was just a question of time before she got back to her best – she looked well and raced with purpose to deny the lightly-weighted rival a full victory.
“We’ll take the dead-heat, nice to share with the Pettigrew stable,” said Corne Spies. “She needed her last two runs and last time was too keen, she-over raced on the straight 1500m at the Vaal.
“Warren Kennedy had her nicely tucked in today and he produced her at the right time. Well done to owners Alfred Pawson and Rob Macnab!”
Kennedy said: “Cockney Pride dug down deep, 1600m is probably at the top her spectrum. She fought back to share the race.”
Cockney Pride is by Querari from Lovely Jubbly (Rakeen) and was raised by Dr Marianne Thomson at Ambience Stud.
