THE Eighth Lord had enough competitive form, a fair draw and a top jockey in a MR79 Handicap over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday – but t 14-1 he still surprised his connections with the ease of his win.
Jockey Piere Strydom, per instruction, tucked The Eighth Lord in behind runners (actually last of the 12-horse field), but when they turned for home he raced up to them like a Graded horse, cruising along the stand with oodles of energy, and pulverising his rivals.
“I was surprised,” said Strydom. He was very laid back after the jump, the fast pace played in our favour. When he turned for home I actually had to wait a while to save some energy because we could’ve hit the front 300m from home.
“He won a good race today, thanks to the Spies team for the ride. They made me look good!”
“I think Piere made us look good,” quipped Corne in return. “I think The Eighth Lord liked the sting out of the ground.”
The Eighth Lord, by Eightfold Path, is owned by a number of owners in partnership, Corne thanked them all. He was raised by Peter Blyth and Clifton Stud.
