Outright ownership
100% ownershipPurchase 100% of a horse and carry 100% of the purchase price, training fees and variable expenses. You retain full economic participation, subject to the ownership agreement and racing rules.
Racehorse ownership brings you closer to the sport than any grandstand seat can. With Spies Racing, you can own a horse outright or take a registered share in a partnership, follow its progress from the stable to race day, and deal directly with the trainers guiding the journey.
There is no single route into racehorse ownership. Depending on the horse and the opportunity available, you may own outright, join other registered owners in a partnership or begin with a smaller registered share.

Purchase an agreed percentage alongside other registered owners. Costs, prize money and sale proceeds are generally allocated according to each owner's percentage, subject to the partnership terms.
Selected horses may offer smaller percentages for owners who want a lower entry point while remaining directly connected to one horse.
The cost of ownership has two parts: the price of acquiring your share and the ongoing cost of keeping the horse in training.
The current Spies Racing base training fee is R14,500 per month excluding VAT for 100% of a horse. Variable expenses are apportioned separately.
There is no single programme that suits every thoroughbred. Our training decisions are built around the horse's stage of development, physical condition, temperament, recovery and racing profile.
We evaluate conformation, movement, temperament, current fitness and veterinary considerations before setting the programme.
Work is increased according to the horse's response. Young horses are taught their job without rushing the foundations they need.
We identify races suited to distance, class, surface and development, travelling when another centre offers the right opportunity.
Every run provides information. Performance, recovery and rider feedback guide the next decision.
Owners receive clear feedback on progress, setbacks and plans, with realistic expectations throughout.

Ownership is not only about race day. It is the process of following the horse, understanding its development and knowing why decisions are made.

No. Many opportunities are offered in percentage shares. The available percentage and price are shown on each horse's profile.

Racehorse ownership is speculative. Purchase prices, training costs and racing outcomes are uncertain, and prize money is never guaranteed. Ownership should be approached as participation in the sport with a clear understanding of the financial commitment.
Tell us your budget and preferences. We can keep you informed about suitable shares, upcoming sales and new horses entering the stable.
Racehorse ownership involves financial risk and ongoing expenditure. Racing performance, soundness, prize money, resale value and the duration of a horse's racing career cannot be guaranteed. All prices, percentages and availability are subject to confirmation and the applicable written agreements. Prospective owners should satisfy themselves that the commitment is suitable for their circumstances.
You do not need to choose a horse before getting in touch. Tell us the level of investment you are comfortable with and we can explain the ownership and training options that may suit you.
